I set out to accomplish the Herculean task of uncovering the best ceramic art blogs and discovered more than I ever imagined. When I visited some of the artist blog sites, I wondered, “How do these people find the time to actually do ceramics?  Writing is a serious discipline–I‘m barely able to meet my goal of 3 entries per week.  If I wrote an entry every day, I wouldn’t have a life.

I’ve included three non-ceramic art blogs as a bonus (+), just because they’re awesome resources for all artists. 

A Plate a Day.  Just what the name says.  A collection of beautiful plates, one day at a time.  Sublime.

A Potter’s Journal  Ron Philbeck’s journal of ceramic works-in-progress, interspersed with his fabulous how-to’s.

Ceramic Arts Daily  While technically an email subscription rather than a blog, CAD is a phenomenal, must have daily source of how-to videos, books and articles by the world’s top ceramic artists.

Ceramic Focus  You will spend hours getting deep into this blog.  Lots of images (and links) of work that is on exhibition around the world

Ceramic Review  An excellent, well-respected print publication and since 2008, a blog providing a mix of practical and critical features on contemporary ceramic art and craft from around the world.

Critical Ceramics (now Clay in Critique) The brainchild of Forrest Snyder, this blog speaks intelligently about ceramic art, featuring interviews and critiques.

Empty Easel +  Helpful information for both new and professional artists—without any of the vague or confusing “art speak” common to the art world.  The articles on how to create a profitable web presence are especially good.

Extreme Craft +   A sassy blog which describes itself as “a compendium of art masquerading as craft, craft masquerading as art, and craft extending its middle finger.”  Right on!

Gary Rith Pottery Blog  Any potter who quotes Pablo Neruda is somebody to watch!  Excellent vlogging, too.

Happy Famous Artists +  An artist collective describing itself as “bad art for bad people.”  Not a ceramic blog, but I feel it’s always a good idea to draw from other resources.  The moniker alone drew me into their off-kilter world.

Lurearts Ceramics  Pam McFadyen is adorable.  Her blog shows how much she loves ceramics and wants to share her experience with “all things clay.”

Mashiko Potter  Gorgeous photos of potter Lee Love’s finished work and works-in-progress.  Lee did a 3-year apprenticeship with National Living Treasure Tatsuzo Shimaoka in Mashiko, Japan, later establishing his own kiln and pottery studio there.  Currently, Lee writes, lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Musing About Mud  Carole Epp enlightens us about what’s going on in the world of clay including calls for entries, new and exciting work from different artists as well as her own work.

One Black Bird   Diana Fayt’s wonderful blog filled not only with her musings, but those of a score of guest bloggers. It’s like 50 blogs in one.

Oomyheck Cold Springs Pottery’s blog is packed with great work and musings in and round the studio.

Pottery Blog  Emily Murphy’s well-designed blog covers everything a studio potter might want to know, and is accented with personal stories from her life.

Paper Clay  Everything you ever wanted to know about paper clay.

SoCalPotters Originally started to create a more cohesive ceramic community in Southern California, this blog is for potters everywhere.

The Pottery Blog  Jennifer Mecca writes about day-to-day life in her studio, balancing her family life with clay.

Tony Clennell   One of my favorite potters and winner of the “most congenial” potter award, Tony and his wife Sheila have one of the best journal blogs online.

This Artist’s Life  Whitney Smith’s blog on the daily life of a ceramic artist is tastefully done, and her delicate, sensitive work is stunningly displayed.

This Day in Pottery History Stephen Earp’s meticulously-researched blog for ceramic history buffs.

Wirerabbit Pots  This blog has great tutorials with helpful photos on subjects like carving in clay, terra sigillata, and naked raku–to name a few.
